Gulf Island Guide

Galiano Island

Long, narrow, and dramatic. Galiano Island is a haven for kayakers, hikers, and artists. Its sandstone cliffs and sheltered coves make it one of the most scenic of the Southern Gulf Islands.

Overview

About Galiano Island

Galiano Island is one of the most visually striking of the Southern Gulf Islands. It runs 27 kilometres long and just 4 kilometres at its widest point, with dramatic sandstone cliffs, arbutus forests, and protected coves. With a permanent population of around 1,300, Galiano has a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.

The main settlement is Sturdies Bay, where the ferry docks, and the island is home to a small but active community of artists, writers, and artisans. The Galiano Saturday Market runs through the summer months. The island is named after the Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcala Galiano, who explored the region in 1792.

Lifestyle

Life on Galiano

Life on Galiano centres around nature, community, and creativity. The island has a strong volunteer culture and a pace that encourages slowing down and connecting with the land and sea. Kayaking is a way of life here. Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park is a premier destination for paddlers and boaters from around the region.

The island has a small grocery store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants and cafes. For major shopping and services, residents take the ferry to Victoria or nearby Salt Spring Island. Internet connectivity is generally adequate for remote work, though speeds vary by location.

Getting There

How to Get to Galiano Island

Galiano is accessible via BC Ferries from Swartz Bay (near Victoria) to Sturdies Bay, with a crossing time of approximately 55 minutes. The ferry from Tsawwassen (Vancouver) also serves Galiano with a sailing time of about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Float planes from Vancouver and Victoria also land at Galiano, and there are several marinas for private boat access. Always check the BC Ferries schedule for current times and reservations.

Real Estate

Galiano Real Estate

Galiano real estate is prized for its scenic beauty and privacy. Properties range from modest cabins and character homes on the waterfront to larger acreages with sweeping ocean views. Limited inventory means properties can sell quickly, and prices tend to be higher than on Mayne or Pender for comparable views.

Medical Services

Healthcare on Galiano

For hospital care, Galiano residents access Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island. Primary care on the island itself has been limited, so most residents are established with care on Salt Spring, in Victoria, or in Sidney. As with most Gulf Islands, having a plan for medical needs and emergency transport is an important part of life on Galiano.

Pet Friendly

Galiano for Dog Owners

Galiano is a wonderful island for dogs, with extensive trails through forests and along the shoreline. The beaches are generally dog-friendly, and the relaxed pace of island life means plenty of walking time.
