Gulf Island Guide

Saturna Island

The most remote of the Southern Gulf Islands. Saturna is wild, quiet, and car-free in character. Permanent residents number only about 350, and the island offers world-class whale watching at East Point Park.

Overview

About Saturna Island

Saturna Island is the outermost of the Southern Gulf Islands accessible by BC Ferries, and the least populated with a permanent community of around 350 people. Saturna has a wild, untamed beauty. The coastline is rugged, the forests are dense, and the pace of life is slower than almost anywhere else in the region.

There is no hospital, no high school, and no bank on the island. Services consist of a general store, a pub, a community hall, and a volunteer fire department. The island's most famous attraction is East Point Park, a stunning headland where orca whales regularly pass close to shore during summer months. It is one of the best land-based whale watching locations in Canada.

Lifestyle

Life on Saturna

Saturna is for those who truly want to get away from it all. The island has no traffic lights, no chain stores, and no fast food. Life here is self-sufficient, community-oriented, and deeply connected to the natural world.

Many residents are retirees, artists, and remote workers who value the island's peace and solitude above all else. Internet connectivity has improved but remains limited compared to the larger islands. Reliable cell service is not guaranteed everywhere.

Getting There

How to Get to Saturna Island

BC Ferries serves Saturna from Swartz Bay (Victoria) at Lyall Harbour, with a crossing time of approximately 85 minutes. This is the longest ferry ride from Victoria of any of the Southern Gulf Islands. The ferry from Tsawwassen also calls at Saturna.

Float planes and private boat access are also available. Always check the BC Ferries schedule for current sailing times, as service is less frequent than on the larger islands.

Real Estate

Saturna Real Estate

Saturna real estate is the most limited of the major Gulf Islands. Properties rarely come on the market, and when they do, they often sell quickly to buyers who already know the island. Waterfront and waterview properties with privacy are the most coveted.
